The European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet), a web portal that brings together marine data and metadata from various sources within Europe in a uniform way, has counted on the Altia Group , through Bilbomática, an Altia Company , to be part of the new unified information service through a single portal.

The portal provides rapid access to reliable and accurate data and information , and is a visual tool for policy and legislation development and for the protection of coasts and oceans , as well as for understanding trends and anticipating future changes.

Specifically, our involvement has focused on project implementation, performing a requirements analysis and understanding the needs and objectives to determine the specific requirements of the geographic information system; on the design of the technical architecture that defines the system structure, including the choice of platform (database, servers, and appropriate software technologies); and on the design of the user interface and the development of the map viewer that allows the visualization, analysis, and management of geographic data from the EMODnet network.

We have also participated in the management of geospatial data , in the integration of these and in the development of geospatial web services , as well as in the maintenance and updating of the portal.

“Bringing together data and observations from diverse sources in a single portal, processing them according to international standards, and making this information available in a user-friendly and easy-to-use manner for researchers, policymakers, private industry, and public administrations has been a major challenge,” said Óscar Fernández, head of Altia’s European Services Unit. “The scale of the project and the impact it has had in terms of savings in time, investment, and effort, as well as in research accuracy, strengthen our position in data visualization and management,” noted Fernández.

Data centralization and cartographic visualization

For a decade, more than 120 organizations have been involved in EMODnet, compiling observations and data from diverse sources under international standards and making them available for third parties to use. This integrated data collection philosophy has benefited policymakers, scientists, private industry, and public administration, reducing costs and efforts and improving the accuracy of marine research, as well as opening up new opportunities for innovation.

The project we are involved in centralizes all of this marine data service , integrating it into a single portal and based on a common cartographic viewer that offers easy access to view and download marine data on different topics, including the marine environment and human activities.

The portal consolidates EMODnet's role as a European operational site data service and a key partner in the European marine data ecosystem.
