Altia Premia is a joint initiative that seeks to encourage and foster the technological talent of students in the Bachelor's Degree in Computer Engineering at the University of Santiago de Compostela. This year's award-winning Final Degree Project (TFG) addresses the use of machine learning techniques with neural networks in dental age estimation .
This award aims to encourage university students by recognizing the practical application of their final degree projects. In this fourth edition of Altia Premia, the jury awarded the prize —worth 1,500 euros—to Ainhoa Vivel Couso for her final degree project entitled AgeX: Automatic explanation in natural language of dental age calculation .
“This award is proof that hard work and effort are always rewarded . My goal with this research is to help professionals better understand the decisions made by artificial intelligence, helping to eliminate distrust in systems and the aversion to using them, especially in high-risk areas such as medicine. Therefore, I deeply appreciate this distinction from the jury and Altia ,” commented the winner.
Josefina Fernández , Director of Operations at Altia and a member of the jury, highlighted the importance of recognizing young talent: “Today's students are tomorrow's professionals. The enthusiasm and motivation they demonstrate is exceptional, and we have a duty to encourage innovative ideas. They provide the passion; we provide the resources.”
For his part, Juan C. Pichel , coordinator of the Computer Engineering Degree at USC and also a member of the jury, echoed Josefina's words, highlighting the level of preparation young people receive today: "Universities are centers of knowledge that train future experts, and as a professor, I can confirm the high level of excellence in the classroom. I am proud to be part of this jury and to be able to endorse the work of these students, who will define society tomorrow."
